Thomas Anthony Gahan

One year in General Dental Practice, Harare, Zimbabwe

Three years intensive study and training in the Oral and Dental Teaching Hospital, University of the Witwatersrand, for the speciality of Oral Medicine and Periodontics. The course comprised the primary medical sciences of anatomy, general pathology and physiology; endodontic, prosthodontic and orthodontic problems related to periodontics; and an intensive didactic and clinical training in oral medicine, oral pathology and periodontics.

Since 1983 I have been primarily involved in the diagnosis and clinical treatment of all forms of periodontal problems, and during this time I have obtained extensive experience in both the surgical and non-surgical approaches to treating periodontal disease.

A considerable proportion of my work has been concerned with the pre-prosthodontic aspects of periodontal therapy, and I have gained great experience from my close association with Prosthodontists, both in Hospital and Private Practice.

Osseointegrated Implantology has constituted a significant portion of my work over the past twenty six years, and to date I have placed over 8500 implants.

At the Faculty of Dentistry I held the post of Senior Specialist, where I was closely involved with all aspects of teaching and clinical training of both Under Graduate and Postgraduate students.
